A new report highlights the latest trends in the second largest value adding sector of the UK economy – manufacturing.
Publishing the sixth in its series of publicly available series, “Trends in UK Manufacturing” over the period 1997 – 2007 is now available from Benchmark Research. The report highlights how the structure and size of UK manufacturing is changing, providing hard facts about the size and capability of UK companies.
During 2007, the views of forecasters and economic commentators converged, describing UK manufacturing as a vital part of the UK economy generally misunderstood and unfairly maligned on two counts. Firstly, that output growth has usually been judged by comparison with the services sector, and secondly, that the sector tends to be measured by its job losses instead of productivity.
The report shows that in fact productivity is at an all-time high. Output per job rose 25% between 1997 and 2003, and by 2006 it was up 44% in just ten years.
The report draws upon a unique source of data for the period 1997 – 2007, the Findlay Publications manufacturing industry universe database. Continuously updated for over 25 years, it covers 30,000 UK manufacturing-related sites – what they make and how they make it.
