Truck and bus manufacturer Scania has integrated its production design, product development and manufacturing processes, using Dassault Systèmes PLM solutions.
Scania creates full scale 3D models with CATIA and ENOVIA, running from design evaluation and virtual manufacturing to marketing material.
Anders Lindberg, technology manager, R&D for Scania, says that the giant evaluated various CAD systems, with the objective of reducing time and costs significantly to develop, produce and improve their products and product descriptions.
"We realised that CATIA was still the best authoring solution for us. One of the key reasons was our previous Dassault Systèmes experience as a supplier," says Lindberg.
He points to 650 employees using CATIA and ENOVIA across Scania, primarily within R&D and production, but also in other areas, such as post-market.
"The biggest difference for the user today is that we have a platform where we can construct in 3D from the start and make cross-functional use in a whole new way. We also have other possibilities for parametric design, optimisation tools and kinematics compared to our previous solution," adds Lindberg.
He cites design decisions that can be quickly changed and says that incorrect choices of, for example, line mountings in hydraulic, cooler, fuel and brake systems, can be avoided by rules.
Scania's collaboration with its supply chain has also been simplified. Scania has developed a data exchange solution built on ENOVIA that makes it possible for users to retrieve, convert, share and import data with suppliers – not just drawings, but also complete 3D models in different standard formats.
