Nissan has agreed a deal with Scottish and Southern Energy to power the expansion of its Nissan/Turbine Business Park into manufacturing electric car batteries.
Nissan plans to invest over £200million on the car battery factory at the Sunderland plant.
Scottish and Southern Energy will provide an embedded electricity network generating a 20MVA 66kV connection under the deal.
Nissan aims to produce 60,000 lithium-ion batteries per year at the site.
Adrian Pike, SSE's Group, managing director said: "This contract is a significant milestone in the development of SSE's Utility Solutions business. We have built up our embedded networks in a typical SSE way- step by step, year-by year."
The project marks the 100th embedded electricity network to be developed by Scottish and Southern Energy outside its distribution areas.
