Sell aircraft interiors outsources design to India

Following a successful pilot programme last year, German aircraft interiors specialist Sell has outsourced 3D design and modelling to engineering and IT services and PLM (product lifecycle management) software specialist INCAT in India.

Sell reckons that up to 80% of its overall design process are now being executed in India, at INCAT’s Centre for Advanced Engineering & Design in Pune, enabling it not only to reduce costs but to benefit from additional engineering design and IT know how. Sell makes the point that it operates in the ultra-competitive BFE (buyer-finished equipment) business – developing and building galleys and galley inserts. The firm says it knew it could cut its engineering costs significantly by outsourcing 3D design and modelling, and, following several industry recommendations, chose INCAT based on its reputation. INCAT is now delivering the project from India, supported by engineers on-site in Germany. “The integration of INCAT people in Sell has made communication easy,” says Joerg Rommerskirchen, deputy director of engineering at Sell. “They acted as an effective link between us and the Pune development centre, with everyone working together as an integrated team. We were very satisfied with the result of our pilot project and will use the results to build our processes for the future. We visited the Pune facility and this only served to strengthen our very positive assessment.”
