Siemens PLM Software has today 16 June 2011) announced a call to action for customers of its Solid Edge CAD software and Velocity Series that, it says, will enable them to help build the next generation of engineering talent.
Karsten Newbury, senior vice president and general manager of the Velocity and Solid Edge business, says the company wants its customers to provide real-world engineering best practices.
The goal, he says, is to help meet manufacturing industry's growing demand for high quality engineering graduates – and the expected result will be a stream of students graduating with practical hands-on engineering experience, using modern product design software.
"Our Solid Edge and Velocity Series customers produce some of the world's most innovative products," explains Newbury.
"They know how difficult it is to find and recruit new engineering graduates with the right set of skills and experience to quickly add value to their product design process," he continues.
"That is why it is so important for us to work closely with the people who best know how to, not only use modern product design technology, but also what it takes to apply that technology to real world problems and come up with creative solutions," states Newbury.
"Engineering and technology are the keys to our future," comments. Gareth James, head of education at the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology). "The programme Siemens PLM Software is putting together is exactly what manufacturing needs to help foster the creativity of young minds to address the huge challenges that face the human race in the coming decades."
One early recruit is gears giant David Brown. Group technology director Graham Penning says: "We have a clear vision of the future and are keen to preserve, apply and expand our vast gearing expertise to the technologies and people that will make up this future."
"Working directly with our local schools and colleges to promote a stronger engineering curriculum, based on real world situations and data, has enabled us to significantly expand investments in the future of our company... So, as a long time user of Solid Edge, we are very encouraged by the prospect of the new Solid Edge Academic Program."
