Siemens UK & Ireland has won a contract worth almost £4 million to supply a Ventilation Control System (VCS) for the Crossrail C610 project in London.

The £3.9 million contract, awarded by joint venture contractor Alstom TSO and Costain (ATC JV), was awarded to Siemens and their WinCC specialist partner Applied Industrial Systems (AIS) following an extensive tender process.

The Siemens name is already heavily involved in Crossrail, with the company’s rail division having been appointed supplier for the central section communications and control systems (C660). Siemens is also the supplier of the signalling and control systems (C620), plus three traction power substations to Network Rail.

ATC JV were looking for a supplier to deliver a SIL2-approved VCS on time, while still meeting the project and rail industry’s requirements, Siemens said. Siemens was selected on the strength of its proposal, which combined safety PLC equipment and SCADA software, plus the tunnel ventilation expertise of AIS, the company added.

Both Siemens and AIS have previous experience of working together on large projects. The two companies collaborated on the Heathrow Airport T5 tunnel, used for the Track Transit System.

Commenting on the contract, Daniel Smalley, product manager – SCADA at Siemens UK & Ireland, said: “The award of this contract is testament to the operational benefits provided by WinCC OA.”

Simon Mott, VCS package engineer at ATC JV, added: “Siemens UK & Ireland and AIS has proven experience with high-profile projects in this area, so we knew its technology and support services were proven, and felt it was best suited to meet the project’s demands.”

The project began in September 2015, and is due for completion in September 2017. The full Crossrail project will be complete a year later.
