Project Details and Timeline
In a statement, Tata Steel’s EAF project lead, Peter Jones, said: “We’re delighted to confirm the appointment of Sir Robert McAlpine to support us on this once-in-a-generation investment project. Our new arc furnace will be one of the largest and most sophisticated of its kind in the world, so it is important that we work with highly skilled and experienced partners to ensure its success.”
The project is set to be completed in three years to unlock further low CO2 steel production. It will involve construction of a new electric arc furnace, ladle furnaces and associated works.
Impact on Workforce and Community
The news comes after around 2,000 workers lost their jobs at the plant in October 2024 after its last blast furnace was shut down due to protest from works and unions.
Sir Robert McAlpine and Tata Steel have been in collaboration since 2022 on feasibility studies and has contributed to several projects at the Port Talbot site over the last 70 years.
Tata Steel's Commitment to Sustainability
Tata Steel UK has set a target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, with a goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030.
