Smaller manufacturing businesses in England are optimistic about their growth prospects in 2013, according to latest data from the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS).
The latest MAS 'barometer' figures reveal that 43% of SMEs in the sector have seen orders increase over the past six months while 62% expect sales to grow between now and June.
The number of firms expecting to take on staff is up 7% to 39% and those investing in new premises and machinery isup 3% to 44%.
Less positively, almost one half (45%) of those questioned cited the availability of specific skills as a barrier to growth with production operatives, CAD designers and CNC programmers most in demand. More than one quarter (27%) admitted they do not have enough capacity to 'work on' their businesses as they are too busy firefighting or dealing with everyday management issues.
MAS area director Lorraine Holmes said: "Our companies are sending out a powerful message and highlighting their determination to explore new opportunities in 2013 following a year of global consolidation in 2012."
