Sonar & Communications Systems to shave up to 50% off product development

Electronic and sonar systems manufacturer Sonar & Communication Systems, part of Ultra Electronics, says that integrating its Infor BPCS ERP system with its PTC Windchill product development system will shave 20—50% off its development times and reduce data management by 50%.

The company says it will free up skilled staff time by providing for greater data visibility, easier access and improved collaboration across the company. Windchill will be used to automate and accelerate design change management, for example, by ensuring that the right information is routed immediately to the right people for approval – as opposed to the original paper-based process. The company says it went for Windchill PDMLink and Windchill InfoEngine as a result of a Product Development System Vision Assessment conducted with PTC Global Services, which identified priorities and a roadmap for improvements. “With the help of PTC’s PDS vision assessment, we realised that exchanging information from design to production using a paper-based system was a major obstacle for process innovation,” says Jon Miller, Ultra’s Legacy Systems Project Manager. “We decided to first target improvements of the link between design, engineering and the ERP system. With our Windchill implementation, designs will now be shared and deployed at the same time, which can help us realise time to market savings of 20—50%.” Sonar & Communication Systems has been a long term Pro/Engineer and Pro/Intralink user for its underwater sonar equipment and aircraft mounted communications equipment. Data upload will shortly be moved to Windchill PDMLink to manage the whole BoM (bill of material) prior to submission into the company’s ERP system.
