With Sun Microsystems now at the helm of StorageTek, the firm last month launched its 2006 data storage portfolio and the T10000 enterprise tape drive – all with the focus on security and automation. T10000 is a development of StorageTek’s earlier T-Series, providing fast access to very large data volumes at a new low price per gig. It also delivers an incredible throughput of 120 Mb/sec with 500 gig capacity uncompressed –one terabyte compressed on a single cartridge. You’re looking at a 250% increase in density and 400% increase in throughput speeds. Beyond all that though, Sun is positioning itself as a thought leader in enterprise data storage – pitching the angle: “Securing access to sensitive information and mitigating risk is essential to helping customers protect their businesses and comply with industry regulations, corporate governance…” The firm says that in the near future, Solaris User and Process Rights Management software will come with Sun’s identity management and information lifecycle management strategy to help secure data and automate movements across an enterprise. “Business and IT are rapidly converging, and we are challenged to reduce complexity, increase efficiency, improve accessibility to information and mitigate risk all at the same time,” says Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “This collaboration between Sun and StorageTek brings it all together from one company – a broad, open product portfolio, industry-leading storage and systems expertise, a vast partner network, and world-class service and support. Few companies are better positioned, or have a greater wealth of resources, to meet the pressing business needs that customers face today.”
