Toyota will launch a solar energy system the size of four and a half football pitches to power its Burnaston factory this July.
The solar array, a joint project between Toyota and British Gas, comprises 17,000 panels and generates 4,600,000kWh energy per year.
Tony Walker, Toyota manufacturing UK deputy managing director said: "Generating solar power on-site to supply electricity to the plant underlines our commitment to do even more to further reduce our carbon footprint and is yet another example of our environmental leadership."
The solar array will produce enough energy to build around 7,000 cars a year at the Burnaston plant in Derbyshire.
The project will help cut CO² emissions by 2,000 tonnes a year at the site that manufacturers Auris and Avensis models, Toyota predicted.
The solar array forms part of Toyota's Sustainable Plant scheme, which aims to boost the environmental credentials of manufacturing sites.
