With the Government setting new targets to reduce UK carbon emissions by 60% by 2050, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with npower business to run The Carbon Reduction Project to help businesses within Trafford Park reach their energy objectives and reduce emissions.

The project sits under the wider initiative; Manchester is my Planet, launched in August 2004 to help Manchester meet its international commitment to climate change. Those companies involved in The Carbon Reduction Project, including Kellogg’s, L’Oreal, B&Q and Manchester United FC will exchange ideas and personal experience on energy issues and receive advice and guidance from npower business, where required. A calendar of workshops covering green energy supply, energy efficiency, combined heat and power, renewable sources, transport energy and waste management are scheduled for 2007. npower business also plans to complement the programme with practical support to put the theory into practice and thereby improve Trafford Park’s environmental impact. Nigel Alcock, head of sales for npower business said, “There remains a great deal of confusion amongst UK business about the environment. The Carbon Reduction Project not only offers the advice, information and resources businesses need to cut their carbon emissions and energy bills, but also practical help to get initiatives into action. We offer sound, professional advice, meeting a wide range of business needs whatever the size, sector or stage in their green agenda. The year-long initiative is a vital business asset.” The project is funded via contributions from those involved relating to the amount they spend on energy. To qualify a business must have an annual energy bill of at least £50,000 and be willing to commit half a day per week to the initiative. Additional partners include The Carbon Trust, Northwest Development Agency and project managers Quantum.
