PLM (product lifecycle management) software giant UGS hopes that by publishing the latest version of the JT engineering data exchange specification, it will further encourage uptake in industry for sharing 3D product data.
Established more than a decade ago, JT has evolved from a lightweight alternative data format for viewing large CAD files, to a flexible standard used for everything from product visualisation to engineering collaboration, change management and links right into production.
Indeed today, JT is probably the industry’s most widely used 3D data transmission format for all of these functions. So publishing the specification is likely to build on its appeal even further – probably also into long-term data retention.
It’s already happening. Ford and DaimlerChrysler have been quite open about their choice of JT format for data exchange with suppliers, and about its significance for their global operations.
Says Alfred Katzenbach, DaimlerChrysler’s director of IT research and Mercedes group development, says: “This announcement paves the way for DaimlerChrysler to use JT as the 3D master format to digitally represent our products in PLM workflows, including visual product reviews, global supplier collaboration and long-term data archival.”
