UK manufacturing of cars, commercial vehicles and engines increased in April, boosted by strong export demand that was almost 10% ahead of last year, according to latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Car manufacturing rose by 9.3% in April, and was up 11.8% over the first four months of the year.
Commercial vehicle output was 3.2% up in April, but was down 9.2% over the January to April period.
UK engine production rose by 1.2% in April and was up 1.7% over the year-to-date.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said sustained investment was delivering desirable products to markets around the world and efforts by employees, trades unions and government were helping ensure the UK remained one of the most competitive locations for global automotive companies.
Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) director Simon Griffiths said the latest figures added to yesterday's good news from Vauxhall at Ellesmere Port suggested that "everything is pointing to sustained growth in the UK automotive sector."
