The HSE and the nuclear industry in the UK are working with UKAS (the UK Accreditation Service) to develop new accreditation for inspection bodies and agencies that work in the nuclear industry.
Their new service is intended to help organisations that verify items or services, in terms of technical specifications, tests, design and construction for nuclear plants.
UKAS is now initiating a pilot programme that will include an initial consultation meeting with applicants and stakeholders, followed by an assessment leading to accreditation of successful applicants.
Accreditation by UKAS will mean that the inspection body has been assessed against internationally recognised standards – demonstrating competence, impartiality and performance.
UKAS says it will use ISO/IEC 17020 and will publish the scope of accredited inspection bodies on its website.
Accreditation will be open to third party (type A) inspection bodies and agencies and in-house inspection bodies (type B) providing first and second party inspection services, in line with the HSE publication T/AST/077, Procurement of nuclear safety related items or services.
Organisations wanting to participate in the pilot programme should express their interest to Lal Ilan, accreditation manager at UKAS before 15 June.
