The University of Liverpool has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), a UK-based technology innovation centre, to further expand interactions across research disciplines and strategic innovation priorities.

MTC is a research and technology organisation at the forefront of manufacturing innovation and part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. MTC uses applied knowledge in science and engineering and state-of-the-art facilities to enable clients to develop, prove, prototype and scale up the next generation of products and processes.

The University of Liverpool’s conducts world-leading research and drives impact through commercialisation and partnerships. The University’s significant research excellence and facilities in advanced materials, additive manufacturing, digital innovation, and sustainable energy technologies align closely with MTC’s innovation mission of supporting the UK research base to commercialise ideas into solutions for customers large and small, across sectors as diverse as automotive, aerospace, rail, informatics, fast-moving consumer goods, food & drink, construction/civil engineering, healthcare and defence. These complementary activities demonstrate a shared mutual interest in working collaboratively to conduct research with a real-world impact.

MTC and the University of Liverpool have a history of successful collaboration, particularly within the field of materials chemistry and manufacturing through the University’s Materials Innovation Factory (MIF) and the School of Engineering.

Under the MoU, the University and MTC aim to expand these interactions across research disciplines and strategic innovation priorities. To further strengthen the partnership, they will work together to find funding opportunities for large collaborative projects and smaller technical projects and programmes in areas of mutual interest.

Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool, said: “Signing this important agreement represents not just a continuation, but a significant strengthening of the successful collaboration that has flourished between our institutions over the years. By pooling our expertise and resources, we can drive forward the frontiers of knowledge and technology, leading to innovations that will have substantial benefits for industry and society.”

Dr Graham Hoare OBE, Chief Executive Officer at MTC, said: “This MoU is a testament to our shared commitment to excellence and our vision for a future where our combined strengths make a lasting difference. We are delighted to be building on our already excellent relationship with the University of Liverpool and look forward to the many achievements and advancements this partnership will bring.”
