A £4.1 million manufacturing centre built by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) will be the first facility of its kind in the world to focus research on nanocomposites.
The International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing (IINM) will exploit polymer processing techniques to enable manufacturers to produce polymer nanocomposites.
The IINM will house characterisation laboratories, a wet chemistry laboratory, processing hall, offices and open plan research space.
According to WMG, by synthesising nanoparticles and incorporating them into polymers, industry will be able to scale up and commercialise products that can be used in such industries such as telecommunications, electronics, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, automotive, security and medicine.
A team of 50 academics and researchers will work with other academic groups and industrial partners, both national and international, on fundamental and applied research projects in the field of nanocomposites.
The announcement comes days after the University of Warwick, WMG and Jaguar Land Rover signed a 'heads of terms' agreement for the construction of the £100m National Automotive Innovation Campus, a research and development facility for the UK automotive industry.
