New device to warn forklift drivers of pedestrians

The device can be fitted to almost any make of forklift truck; it detects the presence of a pedestrian via an RFID active tag that workers wear when on site. The system uses active RFID tags, which pulse a signal several times per second. When the tag – and wearer – enters the proximity detecting field (7 m from a forklift), the driver will be alerted to its presence. The warning is audible and visible, so alerts both driver and pedestrian. Transmon's Paul Sercombe said the system is particularly useful for use when visitors – lorry drivers, for example – are on site and the system is suited to loading/unloading areas, or at exits from warehouses and factories. Sercombe added: "The Pedestrian Alert System requires the supervisor or manager to take the responsibility to ensure that the RFID active tag key rings are worn by all pedestrians, at all times. Managers must also ensure that all elements of the system are in good working order and oversee battery management." The system also offers a forced signal from the key fob to the truck at 25 m, so that a pedestrian can make a driver aware from a greater distance, when appropriate. The RFID transmitters and receivers are powered by the truck battery supply and the active tags have an integral lithium battery supply which lasts for at least two years (depending on pulse time setting), after which they must be replaced under a maintenance schedule.
