Gloria Taiwo-Adegbola, who is a Rail Technologist in the Rail Technologies Team at the Scunthorpe site and Adam Wilby, the Area Technical Manager for Special Profiles at the Skinningrove site have both just graduated from the University of Sheffield.

British Steel colleagues graduate as Doctors of Engineering

Gloria is now a Doctor of Engineering (EngD) in Machining Science, having left industry in 2017 to return to university and complete a masters degree in Aerospace Materials. Following on from those studies, she began further studies with the Industrial Doctorate Centre (IDC), working on her research thesis ‘Temperature Measurement in Rail Grinding’ in 2018. Gloria passed her viva examination in February 2024 and joined British Steel in the same year. She has become a valued member of the Rail Technologies Team.

Adam is also now a Doctor of Engineering (EngD) having completed his studies through the Advanced Metallic Systems CDT in the University of Sheffield Material Science and Engineering department. Adam began his studies in 2018 and completed in June 2024, the title of his research thesis being ‘Characterisation and Understanding of Rail Steel Behaviour for In-Service Life Prediction’. This research was sponsored by British Steel and Lead Researcher at British Steel, Jacob Corteen was his industrial supervisor at the Research and Development facility in Rotherham.

Taking on further studies of this level is a huge undertaking and is testament to their commitment to the industry and to furthering their careers. The EngD qualification is an alternative to the traditional PhD, designed for those who want a career in the engineering industry. The programme combines PhD-level research projects with taught modules, and includes an industry-based research project.
