BT reckons the new smaller scale version of its asset tracking system will provide a stepping stone to RFID deployment for many more manufacturers.
Its BT Auto-ID Lite is a self powered, autonomous asset tracking and monitoring system that open up RFID technology, since businesses don’t have to commit to costly, large-scale adoption projects.
Says a BT spokesperson: “Despite the UK being second only to the US in terms of RFID adoption, the perception among many businesses is that the technology remains expensive and cumbersome to roll-out, prohibiting many from seriously considering its use. BT Auto-ID Lite addresses these issues, providing quick and affordable entry into the RFID market.”
The system is aimed at industries that require visibility of moveable assets across their supply chains, and harnesses active RFID technology with GPRS for mobile data linking, to offer a wireless solution.
BT Auto-ID has already supported blue chip companies, such as Marks & Spencer, on some of the largest RFID and supply chain projects worldwide, as well as smaller, agile enterprises.
Says Tom Williams, COO of BT Auto-ID: “Customers have been asking for a more cost-effective option which will enable them to try out RFID technology. They want to test the business case for RFID in their organisations quickly and easily before deciding to commit significant budget to large-scale projects. Auto-ID Lite will enable companies to explore the benefits of RFID using a comprehensive but simple to implement solution that will enable them to have the right items in the right place at the right time.”
