The funding from the John Gibson Bursary – named after the firm’s founder – is aimed at young people aged 16 to 24. It is intended to be used for education or training, transport while training, and to pay for equipment such as clothing and books.
Local young people near Russell Roof Tiles’ two manufacturing sites in Burton on Trent and Lochmaben had the chance to apply for the bursary, which is worth £1,000 each for any training that is directly related to the three fields.
Bursaries have so far been awarded to Jack Whysall, 18, and Callum Coleman, 17, who are both studying electrical installation at Burton and South Derbyshire College. Declan Higgs, 16, who is studying plastering at the Chameleon School of Construction, and Murray Robson,18, who is studying for his bachelors in Electronic & Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, were also successful.
Andrew Hayward, managing director of Russel’s Roof Tiles, said: “There is a huge skills gap in our sector so it is vital that businesses like ours invest in the long term.
“We are in a huge growth sector. There are still many dynamic British manufacturers thriving which rely on new people joining our industry.”
