Glass manufacturer planning new production facilities after difficult year

Formed in the 1980s, Press Glass manufactures and supplies IGUs, laminated, toughened, decorative and conservatory glass for trade, commercial and new builds.

It has factories in Swansea, Pontyclun and Port Talbot in Wales, as well as Peterborough and Barnsley in England and Cumbernauld in Scotland.

On 1 April 2024, Glass Systems was rebranded as Press Glass.

In the year to 31 December 2023, Glass Systems Limited reported a profit before tax of £2.2m, down from £4.5m during the prior period.

The business also recorded a turnover of £42.4m, a fall from £46.9m

A report accompanying the results noted the results for the year and the financial position of the company were "not considered satisfactory" by the directors.

As a result of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it said there had been an increase in the cost of raw materials together with increases in other direct costs and operating costs.

The review said utility costs had a risk management programme in place that seeks to limit the adverse effects on the financial performance of the company.

During 2024, it said the construction of a new production facility will continue integrating the trading activities of Glass Systems Limited (Swansea site), Vizor Tempered Glass Limited and Glass Systems Direct Limited. The new facility will be equipped with the latest industry technology that will increase production and customer management efficiency.

The company also purchased a new production facility for the Peterborough site towards the end of 2023, which once operational will both eliminate the rental costs of the current factory and enable the installation of a new tempering furnace which will further increase production capabilities.
