IBM improves network performance with intrusion prevention appliance

IBM has unveiled a network intrusion prevention appliance designed to transmit and protect network traffic at core network speeds. Its Proventia GX6116 supports throughputs up to 15Gbps with pre-emptive protection for up to 6Gbps of network traffic.

The appliance is designed to operate at the network core, meeting the needs of large business or carrier deployments and providing ‘ahead of the threat’ protection for the various layers of an enterprise network. IBM Internet Security Systems (ISS) says it’s focused specifically on the requirements of high-performance applications for this – such as Internet telephony that operate at the network core, so requiring security capable of delivering high throughput, scalability and very low latency. It makes the point that protection at very high network speeds allows companies to implement security at the core without impacting business and network performance. The company also says that by protecting across eight network segments, it surpasses the network protection capabilities of competitive solutions – allowing for maximum scalability and future-proofing for security investments by decreasing the number of appliances that enterprises need to purchase to optimize their protection. Also, configurable latency puts network administrators in control of performance and managing risk levels, as opposed to being confined by pre-determined settings.
