The first Investment in Young People (IiYP) Award has been presented to Ben Foster, an employee at Stoke in Trent-based homewares and ceramics manufacturer Portmeirion Group.

The IiYP Award has been developed by Young Chamber Ltd to "recognise the considerable time and effort committed by the UK's small and medium sized companies towards developing employability skills and identifying potential career options for our young people".

Foster has completed his engineering apprenticeship at the Portmeirion Group.

Neville Reyner, chairman of Young Chamber UK, said: "I wholeheartedly congratulate the Portmeirion Group on becoming the first company in the UK to be recognised in achieving the new 'Investment in Young People' Accreditation.

"The Investment in Young People Award is the first formal recognition of the considerable investment from UK employers in supporting students to gain employability skills and helping them to identify career paths and options."

The Award recognises the practical support provided by companies in 9 separate areas and each application is independently verified prior to approval of the Award.

Young Chamber Ltd is a social enterprise that for over 10 years has been supporting the development of students' employability skills. During this time it has engaged with over 15,000 employers who have voluntarily given up their time to offer their support to these young people.

Portmeirion Group brands include Portmeirion, Spade, Royal Worcester and Pimpernel. It employs around 550 staff and exports to more than 50 countries.
