Jaguar Land Rover to cut further 300 jobs

Indian-owned luxury car maker Jaguar Land Rover said today that it is to cut 300 jobs at its Halewood plant and plans to can production of the Jaguar X-Type.

Earlier this month Works Management magazine broke the news that employees had been asked to accept a delayed payment date for their July salaries to ease its ongoing cashflow problems. Now the company says that with the auto industry – especially the premium sector – badly hit by the recession, sales had fallen by 28% in the past 10 months. The Halewood plant would shut down for three weeks later in the year. The European Investment Bank has already approved a €340 million (£290m) bail out but it has yet to be underwritten by the UK Government. JLR chief executive David Smith warned that more shutdowns and job cuts may be on the way if the loan is delayed.
