Of the 5,000 new staff, most will be based in the UK, with recruitment happening in the next year. The firm said they will be looking for 1,000 electronic and software engineers, with the remaining 4,000 working across other sectors – including manufacturing.
JLR is set to start production of its first electric vehicle, the I-PACE, in Austria, but has said it would be open to manufacturing any future models in the UK, as long as conditions such as government support are met. The firm already builds around a third of all cars built in the UK at its sites in Halewood, Solihull and Castle Bromwich.
The company also estimate that half of all new models will be available in an electric version by 2020, driving the need for new skills in its staff.
