Manufacturing industry is trailing behind other UK business sectors when it comes to green issues, according to a study by IP-based network and comms infrastructure services firm SAS Group.
It finds that just 28% of manufacturers surveyed have an energy management policy in place, and only 3% adhere to green IT procurement practices. A further 38% of manufacturers have no plans to adopt policies for energy management over the next 12 months.
Says Charles Davis, CEO of SAS: “These results provide interesting reading, as the manufacturing industry is arguably responsible for more carbon emissions than any other sector. However, this lack of commitment … looks likely to backfire, with the European Commission looking to tighten anti-pollution regulations.
“Failure to establish green procurement practices for all areas of the business before these regulations come into force could leave manufacturing businesses with hefty fines and tarnished reputations, and without enough time to properly plan for, and implement, green ICT infrastructures.”
