With an increase of 1.4%, manufacturing was the largest contributor to the UK production output boost of 0.7% between Q4 2013 and Q1 2014.
Production output increased by 2.3% between March 2013 and March 2014, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
"This," it said, "reflects increases of 3.3% in manufacturing; 12.1% in water supply, sewerage & waste management; and 3.1% in mining & quarrying."
Manufacturing and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning output both increased by 0.5% between February 2014 and March 2014.
Total production decreased by 0.1% between February 2014 and March 2014. There were decreases in two of the main sectors, with mining & quarrying being the largest contributor, decreasing by 2.8% and water supply, sewerage & waste management by 2.1%.
