The newly appointed boss of a state-of-the-art training hub on the Welsh/English border has called on manufacturers to invest in the next generation of skilled workers.

Matt Snelson, managing director of the £3 million Marches Centre of Manufacturing & Technology (MCMT), says the centre, which is due to open in August, can become a learning hub for manufacturers across the UK.

The MCMT is looking to support 2020 learners by 2020, largely through the development of apprentices in advanced manufacturing. The aim is to broaden the skills pool for employers to tap into as the look to compete globally.

“We want manufacturers to tell us the skills they require; we want them to invest in apprentices and use the MCMT to train them,” said Snelson. “Now it’s time for business leaders to step forward and shape the offer so that we can equip young people and existing employees with the skills they need to deliver an immediate positive impact for their companies.”

The MCMT will also work with 400 companies on developing existing manufacturing professionals up to Level 7 qualifications, covering everything from business improvement and team leadership techniques to vehicle body building.

“I was working as quality systems director at [castings provider] Grainger & Worrall when the consortium asked me to be MD for the project,” continued Snelson. “My role at the MCMT will be to lead from the front and ensure that all of the partners are working together to deliver the vision of the centre and create a hub the region can be proud of.”
