Market Drayton-based pie and pasty maker Pork Farms says an overhaul of its forklift fleet is helping the business to achieve its lean manufacturing goals. The company's lean programme entailed a review of all processes, with one result being the appointment of Briggs Equipment UK to supply and service the forklift fleet.
A key part of Pork Farms' review focused on the efficiency of its fleet of forklift trucks at the Market Drayton site. It was soon apparent that cost savings could be made through more effective use of the trucks and Pork Farms realised that to fully implement the lean system, a renewal of the existing fleet would be required.
"The review really highlighted the issues that we were having with the existing fleet," said David Bradley, Pork Farms' supply chain manager. "We discovered that the current fleet wasn't being fully utilised and a reduction in downtime was needed, as was an improvement in the trucks' efficiency when it came to waste removal. We needed to develop a fleet of trucks that would be central to us being able to introduce the lean manufacturing system."
The relationship between the two firms has developed over a number of years and is one that both companies are keen to continue as Richard Close, CEO of Briggs Equipment explained: "The relationship between Pork Farms and Briggs is one that has matured over many years. Our new five-year contract will see us help Pork Farms to achieve their lean manufacturing goals. It's an ambitious project, which is already showing results and one that we want to continue contributing to."
