PTC declares new era of enterprise-wide product design

PTC is claiming a breakthrough in product development, with general availability of its Creo software, which, it says, "enables enterprise wide participation in the product design process", unlocking a new potential for teamwork and efficiency.

"Since we unveiled our Creo product strategy last October, we've seen incredible customer interest in Creo," states James Heppelmann, PTC's president and CEO. "Based on the reaction of the marketplace, we believe that Creo has the potential to deliver the renaissance in CAD innovation that we had predicted at the launch." Creo, he explains, is designed to solve "the unaddressed problems remaining" in mechanical CAD, around usability, interoperability, assembly management and technology lock-in. With Creo, all product stakeholders get scalable interoperable, design apps, so that they can all be involved throughout a product's lifecycle – and beta testers wheeled out by the company like it. "We believe that Creo delivers capabilities that will help increase the productivity of everyone involved in … product development process," comments Roberto Dolci, System Group CIO. "By allowing a broader set of people across the company to access product data in a way that fits their role, and by introducing 3D direct modelling to speed up new product development, Creo helps accelerate our business agility, which drives our success," he states. The first set of Creo apps is designed to optimise engineering, manufacturing and service processes, with role-based packages to help increase productivity for everyone from service planners and technical illustrators to industrial designers and engineers. Creo Sketch, for example, enables freehand drawing of ideas and design concepts in 2D; Creo Layout is aimed at capturing early concepts to drive 3D design; and Creo Parametric is for 3D modelling in Creo Elements/Pro (formerly Pro/Enghineer), with extensions delivering integrated 3D CAD/CAID/CAM/CAE capabilities.
