Manufacturers of folding bicycles, turbines, pumps and shortbread were among the list of winners of The Queen's Awards for Enterprise announced today (21 April).
The awards for business success are split into three main categories: international trade, innovation and sustainable development. Winners came from a range of business sectors, but manufacturers featured in every category. Ninety-five companies picked up an international trade prize, including folding bike manufacturer Brompton Bicycle, submarine communication system maker Alcatel-Lucent, hydro electric turbine manufacturer Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon, Stannah Stairlifts, contract manufacturer Penn Pharmaceutical Services and biscuit firm Walkers Shortbread.
High achievers for innovation included Chas A Blatchford for its high-tech artificial feet which now improve posture and reduce joint damage, and Douglas Equipment for its flight-deck handling equipment for manoeuvring helicopters on to ships. Awards for sustainable development went to 10 firms, including Gripple (also a Best Factory Award winner) and textile maker Camira Fabrics.
