Award-winning data protection systems developer SteelEye says it has combined continuous data protection (CDP) features like ‘any point in time rewind’ with data replication, such as the ability to combine data mirrors across LANs and WANs.
That’s be a world first for Windows: the combination of CDP with off-site replication means that business critical data can be restored in the case of data corruption, viruses or user errors, as well as large-scale physical disasters.
SteelEye also boasts that its Data Replication for Windows v6 has the fastest replication speeds across WANs in the industry.
In brief detail, the ‘any point in time rewind’ facility allows administrators to rewind data back in time to any moment before loss occurred. SteelEye claims that any data can be restored “in minutes”.
Immediately upon noticing data integrity issues, users can mount the replicated data on a backup volume and then move backward and forward through the data stream, via time stamps or other user-defined bookmarks, until optimal data is constructed. That data is then placed into service and normal operations resume.
Incidentally, it also supports multiple replication targets, spanmomg any combination of local and remote sites. Local data recovery is assured by continuous backup within the local data centre, while asynchronous remote data replication protects against local disasters.
