Volkswagen Group UK says that using Tata Consultancy Services will help it "sell more vehicles, sell more parts and drive down costs".
The deal involves consolidating and supporting VW UK's IT, using onshore and offshore IT support – a significant departure for VW. It also includes the Audi, Seat, Škoda, Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brands, and will last for five years.
Nick Gaines, Group IS director at VW Group UK, explains that the initiative is about moving to a consolidated, standardised business platform, enabling mobility for employees, increasing flexibility and enabling cost reduction.
He says that Tata, which is already working on business transformation, found itself tested in the first week of the project, when a major power outage at the UK head office in Milton Keynes caused many critical systems to fail on a Friday evening.
That threatened VW's sourcing, marketing and distribution for all vehicles and parts throughout the UK says Gaines, but TCS mobilised its global team to work overnight onsite and from India – successfully recovering all of the Group's IT services in time for Saturday's trading.
"We couldn't have better proof that we're in safe hands with TCS," says Gaines. We have been deeply impressed by the dedication and collaborative approach taken both by the local and India-based teams. This gives me great confidence in the future relationship between our businesses."
