SAP has announced general availability of business software designed to enable manufactures to better measure, report on and cut the cost of their energy.
Franz Hero, vice president of the chemistry industry business unit at SAP, observes that rising energy costs and a need to reduce environmental impact are driving companies to seek tools capable of streamlining emissions management and environmental compliance.
He says SAP’s Industry Value Network group for chemicals worked on the solution, which is in fact a combination of SAP’s Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (SAP MII) application, integrated with OSIsoft’s PI and the SAP Environmental Compliance application, developed with TechniData.
“SAP, TechniData and OSIsoft are delivering a collaborative solution that not only provides benefit in lowering the cost of operations, but leads to a positive impact on the environment,” says Hero.
“The SAP Environmental Compliance application, with its enhanced functions in enterprise energy management, greatly benefits our customers and the environment.”
What kinds of benefits? Dr Patrick Kennedy, CEO and founder of OSIsoft, explains that customers are combining real time and event data from his PI product, with business data from SAP, to determine where they stand – and then, interactively, how to lower the usage of these resources.
“In many cases, these projects have resulted in significant and sustainable reduction of operating costs. In the current economic climate, customers are finding that the only projects that can affect the bottom line in the near term are those where information drives the savings.”
