VT Nuclear Services has been awarded a £1.2 million contract to supply drums for the Dounreay (pictured) nuclear plant cementation facility. The contract will supply waste drums for the safe long term storage of nuclear waste at the site in Scotland from June this year.
The waste drums are built at VT Nuclear Services manufacturing facility in Chester. The plant currently has 60 employees and specifically focuses on the manufacturing of nuclear waste drums for customers.
John Chubb, managing director of VT Nuclear Services said the signified the plant’s expertise in manufacturing drums for storage of nuclear waste. “Our experience in dealing with the complex challenges of nuclear waste and in particular around storage solutions means we are able to provide customers with a rigorous and unparalleled solution,” he said.
VT Nuclear Services is part of the erstwhile shipbuilder’s support services company. Dounreay Nuclear Power Development Establishment was established in 1955 to develop fast breeder reactor technology and subsequently three nuclear reactors were built there. Decommissioning of Dounreay is planned to bring the site to an interim care and surveillance state by 2036.
