Whirlpool takes integrated engineering simulation to new levels

Consumer appliance manufacturer Whirlpool is moving its global engineering facilities over to simulation software from MSC Software to improve product quality and reduce warranty costs.

The company says that by standardising on the SimEnterprise platform – which includes MD Nastran, SimXpert, SimDesigner and SimManager Enterprise – its virtual product development tools will be able to use detailed digital product models to simulate and verify every aspect of the product from functional performance to shipping and installation. It means Whirlpool can make and track design and packaging decisions and communicate and coordinate product development everywhere, which the company believes will drive product innovation and quality as well as competitiveness. “Our company goal is to dramatically improve the performance of our packaging and platform for our customers,” says Thomas Gielda, director of global mechanical structures and systems for Whirlpool. “MSC’s SimEnterprise environment will allow us to simulate multi-discipline engineering problems, develop and automate best practices, and manage engineering data and processes throughout our entire global engineering enterprise.”
