Wireless world moves beyond smart metering

Dutch wireless technologies firm Waleli is banking on massive uptake of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, and launching equipment aimed at transport and logistics, remote control and security.

Latest developments include a smart metering system, remote management kit for industrial floor cleaners and equipment that manages remote maintenance of bottle recycling units. “M2M has the potential to become a mega trend and the market is expected to be worth over eur 220 billion in 2010, compared to the current eur 20 billion euros,” says Siete Hamminga, CEO and founder of Waleli. The company’s smart metering was developed with Smart Dutch, and uses a combination of wireless technologies to create a system which it says is significantly cheaper than existing alternatives. Meter readings of up to 100 households are collected at one central point before being sent to the utility company – meaning that hardware costs and license fees for the GPRS or Internet connection are shared. As for the bottle recycling units, Waleli has been partnering with Dutch company Techno Trend Milieutechniek on a wireless system that alerts the company to machine malfunctions and provides for remote fixes.
