Britain’s leanest manufacturers to share secrets

Three of Britain's leanest manufacturers are to share the secrets of 20 years' worth of sustained corporate and operational improvement next week. The three, identified by the US-based international lean guru Professor Richard Schonberger (pictured) as being among a small handful of UK-located companies demonstrating improving trends spanning more than two decades, will be appearing at Works Management magazine's 2009 Lean Manufacturing Conference.

From Molins plc CEO Dick Hunter will be discussing how this £100 million turnover engineering business focused on Lean from a strategic, business perspective – a story of diversification, disposals, acquisitions and outsourcing in the pursuit of corporate and operational improvement. Coats' Supply Chain Director for Europe and Asia Hizmy Hassen will describe how the global leader in sewing thread manufacture has worked on the implementation of lean principles among suppliers. Darren Wilson, Operations Manager at British Gypsum will present a case study in achieving success through world class manufacturing. The conference, to be held at the manufacturing organisation EEF's Woodland Grange in Leamington Spa next Wednesday (14 October), also features an in-depth case study from 3M's operational development specialist Craig Wood, setting out how the company's secure systems and printing operation accelerated performance gains by engaging its people in continuous improvement.
