Discover the lean secrets of success of Carl Zeiss

Works Management is giving readers an exclusive opportunity to visit Carl Zeiss, the Cambridge-based electron microscope maker on 30 September.

You can learn how to take lean into your back office and unlock monumental efficiency gains by taking a tour of former Best Electronics & Electrical Plant BFA winner, Carl Zeiss Microscopy.

Cambridge is the benchmark site for lean manufacturing in the German-owned Carl Zeiss Microscopy group. The site, which won a hat trick of Best Factory Awards in 2011, makes cutting edge electron microscopes. It insists lean principles are for everybody in the organisation, not just on the production line. They are now rolled out across the entire plant.

The Carl Zeiss team has started a new ambitious programme to implement the ground breaking Lean 3P (production, preparation and process) system, which fuses the development of the manufacturing process with R&D new product development innovation.

The BFA judges summed the site up as “an excellent example of the implementation of lean manufacturing, especially one piece flow and visual management, by a low volume, high value manufacturer”.

Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
