SAP and its Sybase acquisition have now launched a Mobile Business Unit, aimed, they say, at speeding the delivery of mobile applications across SAP and Sybase software, while also encouraging the on-demand approach.
The new business unit comprises both SAP and Sybase employees, under the leadership of John Chen, chairman and CEO of Sybase, and with SAP's own Bob Stutz as general manager.
Chen says the new Mobile Business Unit will also help customers to unwire their companies' operations "by developing the world's best mobile business applications".
He explains that the goal is mobilising SAP solutions to all devices via a new SDK (software development kit), and delivering a single mobile development and deployment platform, which will also give easy access to SAP and non-SAP data.
"With Sybase as the mobile arm of SAP, we're best positioned to capitalise on one of the most important trends in the industry to deliver the full value of business processes anywhere and on any device," comments Chen.
"Bob Stutz has significant experience in developing enterprise applications, and I am confident that, under his leadership, we will continue to lead the way in technology innovation and market share," he adds.
Progress to date is looking convincing: Sybase launched feature pack 2.5 for SAP Business ByDesign last July, delivering one of the most wide-ranging and integrated on-demand ERP solutions. That is important, because SAP uses this suite not only as its platform for partners' industry-specific solutions, but also its own offerings for large manufacturers.
Under the new Mobile Business Unit, Chen suggests that feature pack 2.6 for SAP Business ByDesign, due next year, will serve, for example, as the platform for SAP Sales OnDemand, which will integrate with existing ERP.
