Take 3D CAD data out of the engineering department

Manufacturers wanting to unlock 3D CAD data from their engineering departments for re-use in production, tech pus and the supply chain can now do so inexpensively with Seemage.

Bristol-based Xype, which has a history in the local aerospace sector with companies like Airbus and BAE Systems, is now the UK master reseller for Seemage’s publishing technology. With Seemage, Xype says it can now bring 3D CAD information and product metadata out of the design office and integrate it across manufacturing businesses. Existing 3D product data can thus be additionally used across departments such as production, shop floor assembly, service support, sales, marketing and distribution. Specifically, users can get 3D illustrations and interactive animations of assembly, installation and operational sequences, via standard desktop PCs. It produces lightweight, XML-based files that don’t require a CAD license, making the outputs extremely usable. Says Pete Lewis, Xype managing director: “Our customers realise that they have a priceless commodity in their CAD files, but also that beyond the engineering design process this asset is under utilised. By providing open access to this data in downstream departments, you are able to extract great value and competitive advantage from an existing resource. They key is providing the right tools to the right guy.”
